APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, 16S, heavy 14K rose gold drum style J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) OF original case with initials to rear, gold cuvette with Christmas 1888 presentation engraving, glazed observational mvt cover, white glass enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#607266. Gross weight of assembled watch 78.4 dwt (122.0 g). An excellent example of this rare top grade watch, based on known examples the total production of Elgin's Grade 72 is believed to be approximately 450 made.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, barrel bridge with fine scratch at left perimeter, some typical mild micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with scattered faint to very faint outer chapter hls, two scratches below center, infinitesimal pinpoint flake to rim of seconds-register near 8, some tiny edge flakes under bezel near 4 and 6:30; excellent hands; case shows very little wear, mild shallow dent to upper rear perimeter, ding to band at 4:30 and adjacent ding to reeding of bezel at 4:30, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals.
